William Granville Moore was born July 13, 1873 in Tunnel Hill, Johnson County, Illinois, and died December 08, 1948 in Ozark, New Burnside, Johnson County, Illinois. He was the son of Gardner Moore and Mary Elizabeth Stonum Moore and the twin of Nancy Jane Moore Jackson Cater. He married Sarah Penina Yates April 10, 1894 in Johnson County, Illinois, daughter of Needham Hollie Yates and Elizabeth Jane Harrell. She was born November 11, 1875 in Ozark, New Burnside, Johnson County, Illinois, and died April 09, 1940 in Ozark, New Burnside, Johnson County, Illinois. Sarah Penina Yates was of Cherokee blood through the Yates and Branscum (Branchcomb) lines, but she is also a direct descendant and namesake of Winifred Penina Johnson Wise Harrell. They were: Clethia Bell Moore Woodworth, John Moore, James Clella Moore, William Coy "Pat" Moore, Carrie Mae Moore Leonard, Roy Albert "Rome" Moore, Everett Isaac Hollie "Skinner" Moore, Lillie Mae Moore Duncan, Robert Moore, and Earl Lee "Beatle" Moore.
In 1861William Granville Moore’s father, Gardner Moore, went with his brother Granville Moore to join the federal troops and fight for the North in the Civil War. His brother was underage, perhaps only 15, but passed for older, and joined. Gardner looked and was far too young and was sent back. Granville finished his hitch in Company K – the 60th Illinois Infantry, and could have been discharged. Like 75% of the other Illinois Volunteers in this brigade, he signed on for another four years. Shortly after reenlisting, Private Granville Moore was killed at Kennesaw Mountain by a Confederate sniper on June 24, 1864. He never had the chance to marry or have children, The Moores remember Granville Moore each time they meet as a fallen patriot who never earned the second hitch money that would have bought a nice farm back home in Johnson County. William Granville Moore (the namesake of Gardner’s brother lost in the Civil War) had ten children, so the family likes to think that the spirit of the first Granville Moore lives on in these descendants in particular.
